Das Performance Open-Air St. Gallen findet dieses Jahr am Samstag, 16. August, zum fünften Mal im Stadtpark und im Frauenpavillon statt. Das diesjährige Thema „Like Being at Home“ wird aus verschiedenen künstlerischen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet. Das Festival wird von Maricruz Peñaloza kuratiert und in Zusammenarbeit mit der Künstlerin, Fotografin und Kuratorin Elsbeth Carolin Iten organisiert. Das Festival wird aus zwei Formaten bestehen: Live-Performances und Künstler:innen-Gespräche.

Sieben eingeladene Positionen werden sieben Performances realisieren. Sechs (6) Einzelkünstler:innen sowie ein (1) Kollektiv stehen auf dem Programm, die sich mit dem Titel des Festivals “Like Being at Home” auseinandersetzen und das Thema zur Diskussion stellen. Des Weiteren wurde seitens des Festivals die Arbeitsgruppe „TEA TIME“ des PANCH-Performance Art Network Schweiz zur Teilnahme am Festival eingeladen. „TEA TIME“ steht für gemeinsame Zeit. Sich zu zweit mit Bekannten und Unbekannten unterhalten, sei es über Performancekunst oder Kunst im Allgemeinen, über den Alltag oder das Leben im Allgemeinen. Die Pausen werden dazu dienen.

„Like Being at Home“ – Was ist ein Zuhause? Menschen, Dinge, Orte, alles, was uns umgibt und uns Wohlbefinden schenkt oder uns an bestimmte Erfahrungen erinnert? Die Familie, die Freund:innen, die Musik, ein Stück Brot, eine Tasse Suppe, vielleicht starker Regen, das offene Meer, der sternenklare Nachthimmel, die Gerüche auf den Märkten und die Farben der Landschaften? Oder ist es das Gefühl von Ruhe, Harmonie und Geborgenheit, das mit dem Zuhause-Sein assoziiert wird, von entscheidender Bedeutung?

In Zeiten politischer und gesellschaftlicher Unruhen und Spannungen, in denen viele Menschen vor einschneidenden Lebensentscheidungen stehen, hat das Bedürfnis signifikante und existenzielle Bedeutung. Sich in vertrauter Umgebung behütet zu fühlen, wird dabei nicht ausschliesslich autonom getroffen, sondern ist vielmehr das Resultat komplexer Einflüsse. Migration, Flucht sowie geopolitische Konflikte und damit einhergehende Polarisierungsphänomene, die unter anderem durch populistische Regierungen hervorgerufen werden, sind nur einige der Herausforderungen unserer Zeit, mit denen sich viele Menschen heute weltweit konfrontiert sehen. Für andere hingegen sind es die Werte Sicherheit, Freundschaft, Fürsorge und das Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit und des Wohlbefindens in einer vertrauten Umgebung, die den Begriff „Like Being at Home“ ausmachen. Umso wichtiger ist es für jeden von uns, sich zu Hause zu fühlen. Dies wirft unter anderem die Frage auf, wie das Zusammenleben in einer fremden Umgebung gestaltet werden kann?

Empathie, Respekt und Vertrauen gegenüber dem jeweils anderen erachten wir als Basis für ein sozialverträgliches Miteinander. Der Begriff „Like Being at Home“ verdeutlicht die Relevanz der Förderung positiver zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen und der Bereitschaft zu offenem Dialog und Kommunikation.

Die 5. Ausgabe des Performance Open-Air St. Gallen „Like Being at Home“ zielt darauf ab, durch performative Aktionen im Stadtpark von St. Gallen eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema zu fördern und lädt alle Interessierten ein, diese Veranstaltung zu besuchen und gemeinsam mit den Künstler:innen eine Diskussion über das Gesehene zu führen.

Das Performance Open-Air St. Gallen findet bei jeder Witterung statt und adressiert zum einen ein kunst- und kulturinteressiertes Publikum, zum anderen die Anwohner:innen der Nachbarschaft rund um den Stadtpark sowie Gäste und Besucher:innen aus anderen Teilen der Stadt und des Landes.

Über die Veranstaltung wird in allen gängigen Printmedien, Posters in der Stadt sowie über die eigenen sozialen Medien und die Website informiert: Flyer, Anzeigen in der Zeitschrift Saiten, Artikel in Tageszeitungen sowie Einladungen werden verschickt.

The Performance Open-Air St. Gallen will take place for the fifth time this year on Saturday, 16 August, in the Stadtpark and the Frauenpavillon. This year’s theme, “Like Being at Home”,’ will be explored from various artistic perspectives. The festival is curated by Maricruz Peñaloza and organised in collaboration with artist, photographer and curator Elsbeth Carolin Iten. The festival consists of two formats: live performances and artist talks.

The Performance Open-Air St. Gallen is scheduled to take place for the fifth time this year on Saturday, 16 August, in the Stadtpark and the Frauenpavillon. The central theme of this year’s event, ‚Like Being at Home‘, will be explored from a variety of artistic perspectives. The festival has been curated by Maricruz Peñaloza and organised in collaboration with artist, photographer and curator Elsbeth Carolin Iten. The programme includes live performances and artist talks.

The event will feature seven performances by invited artists. The programme will feature six individual artists and one collective, who will explore the festival title“Like Being at Home” and open up the theme for discussion.

What is the meaning of home? ‘“Like Being at Home”? People, things, places, everything that surrounds us and makes us feel comfortable or reminds us of certain experiences? The family, friends, music, a piece of bread, a cup of soup, maybe heavy rain, the open sea, the starry night sky, the smells at markets and the colours of the landscapes? Perhaps it is the feeling of calm, harmony and security associated with being at home that is of crucial importance?

In times of political and social unrest and tension, when individuals are confronted with important life choices, the need for security and a sense of belonging takes on significant and existential importance. The aspiration to feel secure within the confines of one’s familiar environment is not a matter of autonomous decision-making. Rather, it is the consequence of intricate social, political and cultural influences. Migration, forced displacement and geopolitical conflicts, along with the associated phenomena of polarisation caused, among other things, by populist governments, are just some of the challenges of our time and that many people worldwide face today. However, for others, it is the values of security, friendship, care and a sense of belonging and well-being in a familiar environment that constitute the concept of “Like Being at Home”. This makes it all the more significant for each of us to feel at home. Security, friendship, care and a sense of belonging are values that are equally important to us, as is feeling comfortable in familiar surroundings. This is also influenced by the solidarity and empathy of our social environment and social structures. Among other things, this raises the question of how we can shape our coexistence in an unfamiliar environment. How can places and spaces be created that “Like Being at Home”?

We consider empathy, respect and trust in each other to be the basic principles of socially acceptable coexistence. Therefore the concept of “Like Being at Home” emphasises the importance of promoting positive interpersonal relationships and encouraging open dialogue and communication.

The 5th edition of Performance Open-Air St. Gallen – “Like Being at Home” aims to promote critical engagement with the topic through performative actions in St. Gallen’s city park and invites all interested parties to attend the event and join the artists in a discussion about what they have seen. In addition, the festival has invited the ‘TEA TIME’ working group of the PANCH Performance Art Network Switzerland. ‘TEA TIME’ stands for time spent together. Talking to friends and strangers, whether about performance art or art in general, about everyday life or life in general. The breaks between performances will serve this purpose.

The Performance Open-Air St. Gallen will take place regardless of the weather. To promote accessibility, there is no admission fee. The 5th Performance Open Air St. Gallen 2025 is primarily aimed at everyone – an audience interested in art and culture as well as residents of the neighbourhood around the city park and guests and visitors from other parts of the city and the country.

Information about the event will be provided in all mainstream print media, on posters around the city, on social media and on the website: flyers, advertisements in the magazine Saiten, articles in daily newspapers and invitations will be sent out.
