4. PERFORMANCE OPEN-AIR ST. GALLEN- ~~Hochkunst!?~~

Der Stadtpark wird zusammen mit dem Frauenpavillon zum vierten Mal als Begegnungs-, Aktions- und Auseinandersetzungsort für das 4. Performance-Open-Air St. Gallen dienen.

Das 4. Performance Open-Air St. Gallen findet am 19. August 2023 von 14-19 Uhr im Stadtpark und Frauenpavillon statt. Es umfasst zwei Formate: Live-Performances und Künstler*innen Gespräche.

Auch in diesem Jahr sollen neue Erfahrungen und spielerische Zugänge zum Verständnis von Performancekunst im Vordergrund stehen. Bereits die Konzeption und Organisation des Festivals ist als künstlerisches Projekt angelegt. POASG findet bei jedem Wetter statt. Um die Zugänglichkeit zu fördern, wird kein Eintritt verlangt.

Die 4. Ausgabe des Performance Open-Air St. Gallen trägt den Untertitel: ~~Hochkunst!?.~~

Was bedeutet “Hochkunst” wirklich? Was sollten wir unter diesem Begriff verstehen? Ist das auch Performance Kunst? Wozu und wem dient sie?

Die Definition von „Performance“ hat sich nicht nur in der Kunstwelt längst etabliert. Auch in der Wirtschaft, im Sport und in der Automobilindustrie wird der Begriff seit über zwanzig Jahren verwendet und stellt sich nach diesen Definitionen aus dem Oxford Dictionary wie folgt dar:

Substantiv, feminin [die]

einem Happening ähnliche, meist von einem einzelnen Künstler, einer einzelnen Künstlerin dargebotene künstlerische Aktion.
Bankwesen: prozentualer Wertzuwachs des Vermögens einer Investmentgesellschaft oder auch eines einzelnen Wertpapiers

Letzteres wird besonders gross geschrieben und bezieht sich auf die Aufwertung des Vermögens.

Die Performance-Kunst hingegen wird wenig gewürdigt. Ist sie doch keine hohe Kunst? Wird sie (noch) wenig gewürdigt? Was will sie uns zeigen? Zeigt sie uns unter anderem die prekäre Situation, in der sich die Kunstschaffenden (immer noch) befinden? Oder will sie uns die Gesellschaft zeigen, in der wir leben? Und alle sozialen und politischen Strukturen, von denen wir ein Teil sind?

Bricht diese Kunstgattung noch mit Tabus und Normen, Institutionen, Regeln, Codes und stellt sie in Frage? Was ist Unterhaltung und was ist Kunst? Hohe Kunst? Oder will uns die Performance-Kunst einen anderen Blick, das heisst aus der Perspektive der Kunst, einen Überblick über unseren Alltag, über unsere gegenwärtige Realität geben? Was offenbart und enthüllt sie uns in dem Moment, in dem wir sie erleben? In Zeiten wie diesen, mit unzähligen Herausforderungen (Kriege, Massenmigrationen, Armut, Klimawandel), die u.a. die Aufmerksamkeit auf wichtige Fragen der sozialen, ökologischen und politischen Landschaft lenken. Was also offenbart und enthüllt sie uns in dem Moment, in dem wir sie erleben? Um alle diese und andere Fragen zu beleuchten, haben wir sechs Kunstschaffende eingeladen, die diese und andere Fragen in ihrer Praxis aufwerfen: vier (4) Singles, zwei (2) Duos. Wir möchten weiterhin ein Festival gestalten, das eine Vielfalt von Geschlechtern, Identitäten und Kulturen aufgreift und die Komplexität und Interdisziplinarität des Konzepts der Performance aufzeigt.

Ein zentraler Gedanke des Festivals ist es, durch die Durchführung der Performances im öffentlichen Raum, den Gedankenaustausch und die Annäherung zwischen den Künstler*innen und dem Publikum zu fördern. Damit soll die „Eisbarriere“ durchbrochen werden. Insbesondere bei Besucher*innen, die mit der Performance-Kunst oder Kunst im Allgemeinen nicht vertraut sind. Ziel ist es, einen aktiven Dialog zwischen den Kunstschaffenden und dem Publikum zu schaffen.

Um diesen Dialog zwischen Kunstschaffenden und dem Publikum zu fördern, finden zu allen Arbeiten Gesprächsformate statt. Auf diese Weise können der Arbeitsprozess und die Hintergründe seiner Realisierung verständlicher und zugänglicher gemacht werden.

So sollen sich die Kunstschaffende und ihre Werke mit dem Stadtpark und den Besuchenden verbinden und einen Austausch erzeugen.

Das 4. Performance Open Air St. Gallen soll auch dazu beitragen, altersübergreifende Begegnungen zu schaffen sowie das soziale und kulturelle Leben im Stadtpark im Kunstkontext zu beleben.

Beim 4. Performance Open Air St. Gallen sollen weiterhin neue Erfahrungen und lustvolle Zugänge zum Verständnis der Performance-Kunst im Vordergrund stehen. Das 4. Performance Open-Air St. Gallen findet bei jeder Witterung im Stadtpark sowie im Frauenpavillon statt. Das Festival ist als künstlerisches Projekt angelegt.

Ein Tag. Zwei Formate

Es ist uns, dem Organisationsteam und dem Kuratorium, ein Anliegen, verschiedene Ansätze aufzuzeigen. Mindestens ebenso zentral ist das Anliegen, einen Generationenmix abzubilden.Verschiedene arrivierte Positionen ebenso wie Künstler*innen, die am Anfang ihrer künstlerischen Karriere stehen, einzuladen, ist uns ebenfalls ein Anliegen:

Sechs Positionen werden sechs Performances durchführen. Vier (4) Einzelkünstler*innen sowie zwei Künstler*innenpaare stehen auf dem Programm: Birgit Widmer – Gais /AR. Das 4. Performance Open Air St. Gallen richtet sich in erster Linie an alle – an ein kunst- und kulturinteressiertes Publikum ebenso wie an die Anwohnerinnen und Anwohner der Nachbarschaft rund um den Stadtpark sowie an Gäste und Besucher*innen aus anderen Teilen der Stadt und des Landes.

4TH PERFORMANCE OPEN-AIR ST. GALLEN- High Art!?

For the fourth time, the Stadtpark and the Frauenpavillon will be the venue for the 4th Performance Open-Air St. Gallen.

The 4th Performance Open-Air St. Gallen will take place on 19 August 2023 from 2-7 pm in the Stadtpark and the Frauenpavillon. It includes two formats: Live performances and artist talks.

This year’s edition will continue to focus on new experiences and playful approaches to understanding performance art. The festival itself is conceived and organised as an artistic project. POASG takes place whatever the weather. In order to promote accessibility, no entrance fee will be charged.

With the Stadtpark and the Frauenpavillon as a meeting place and platform for artists, the Performance Open-Air St. Gallen is becoming an increasingly important venue for various disciplines. From visual and performing arts to music and dance. Not only for St. Gallen, but for the whole of Eastern Switzerland. the artists intervene in the city park, play into it and interact with it.

The 4th edition of the Performance Open-Air St. Gallen bears the subtitle: High Art!

What does „high art“ really mean? What should we understand by this term? Is it also performance art? What is it for and whom does it serve?

The definition of „performance“ has long been established not only in the art world. It has also been used in business, sport and the automotive industry for over twenty years, and according to these definitions from the Oxford Dictionary it is

Noun, feminine

artistic action resembling a happening, usually presented by a single (…) artist.

Banking: Percentage increase in the value of the assets of an investment company or even an individual security. The latter is particularly capitalised and refers to the appreciation of assets.

Performance art, on the other hand, is undervalued. Is it not high art? Is it (still) underappreciated? What does it want to show us? Is it showing us the precarious situation in which artists (still) find themselves? Or does it want to show us the society we live in? And all the social and political structures of which we are a part? Does this art genre still break with taboos and norms, institutions, rules, codes and question them? What is entertainment and what is art? High art? Does performance art want to give us a different view, that is, from the perspective of art, an overview of our everyday life, of our present reality? What does it reveal and unveil to us in the moment we experience it? In times like these, with innumerable challenges (wars, mass migrations, poverty, climate change) that, among other things, draw attention to important questions of the social, ecological and political landscape. So what does it reveal and unveil to us at the moment we experience it? To shed light on all these questions and more, we have invited six arts practitioners who raise these and other questions in their practice: four (4) singles, two (2) duos. We want to continue to create a festival that addresses a diversity of genders, identities and cultures, and to show the complexity and interdisciplinarity of the concept of performance.

By staging the performances in public space, a central idea of the festival is to promote the exchange of ideas and the rapprochement between artists and audiences. The aim is to break through the „ice barrier“. Especially for visitors who are not familiar with performance art or art in general. The aim is to create an active dialogue between the artists and the audience.

In order to facilitate this dialogue between the artists and the audience, discussion formats will take place for all works. In this way, the working process and the background to its realisation can be made more understandable and accessible. In this way, the artists and their works will connect with the city park and the visitors, creating an exchange.

The 4th Performance Open Air St. Gallen should also contribute to the creation of cross-age encounters as well as to the enlivening of the social and cultural life in the Stadtpark in the context of art.

The 4th Performance Open Air St. Gallen will continue to focus on new experiences and joyful approaches to understanding performance art. The 4th Performance Open Air St. Gallen will take place in the Stadtpark and in the Frauenpavillon, regardless of the weather. The festival is conceived as an artistic project.

One day. Two formats

For us, the curatorial team and the organisation, it is important to show different approaches. At least as central is the concern to represent a mix of generations. It is also important to us to invite established positions as well as young artists at the beginning of their careers.

Six positions will give six performances. Four (4) individual artists and two artist couples are on the programme: Birgit Widmer – Gais /AR. The 4th Performance Open Air St. Gallen is primarily aimed at everyone – an audience interested in art and culture as well as the residents of the neighbourhood around the Stadtpark and guests and visitors from other parts of the city and the country.
